The Iberian Peninsula was an Islamic territory from the 8th century until at least the 11th century but in the south, Islam endured longer, in some places until the 15th century. Luxbuna, as Muslim Lisbon was called, was reconquered by the Christians in 1147, but the community of believers was organized until the 16th c. in Lisbon’s Moorish quarter of Mouraria around its two mosques and the “Madrassa”. The influence of the Muslim civilization and art on the character and ways of life of Portugal and Spain was deeply felt and persists in many ways till today.
